Singapore. Cars that automatically make an appointment for service: Arriving in Singapore on 16 January 2009, BMW’s authorised distributor, Performance Motors Ltd (PML) is offering the BMW TeleServices system, the world’s first networking system between the vehicle and BMW Service Partner, giving the customer supreme comfort and safety of the highest standard, and bringing the customer service to a new level of excellence.
Over 70 control units in the new BMW 7 Series continuously monitor all elements that are crucial to the performance and safety of the vehicle. In the event that a need for service or in rare cases a fault is detected, a toll-free call is initiated automatically without any driver intervention. This data-call sends relevant service information to PML that will then analyse the data and contact the customer to schedule a service appointment.
PML is therefore able to determine the need for service in good time, ordering any parts or components that might be required and thus ensure that they are available when the time for service comes up. This keeps the customer’s visit to the workshop as short as possible.
Furthermore, the customer is also informed by PML in advance the type of service that is required and the amount of time it will take. This allows the customer to schedule his appointments to his convenience and at exactly the right point in time, fitting perfectly into one’s personal timetable.
Planning a service appointment in advance also gives the customer greater freedom for individual wishes and demands: Discussing matters personally with his Customer Service Advisor, he may for example, consider whether to renew the brake pads slightly ahead of time before setting out on a long distance road trip. Again, all the information required for such a decision is provided in advance through BMW TeleServices.
As a result, the customer is always able to rely on his car automatically registering for service, without having to keep an eye on dates and deadlines, without making unnecessary telephone calls on possible enquiries, and without having to contact PML for an appointment.
Exclusive to BMW: innovations in service helping to save time and money.
BMW TeleServices follow a long line of innovations that BMW has introduced in the area of service, all based on an intelligent analysis of the car’s needs due to its usage rather than an artificial set mileage. For example, in the 1980s, the BMW Service Interval Indicator communicated the service needs of a BMW to its owner through 5 indicator lights in the instrument panel. When the ignition is switched on, up to five green indicator lights will come on. These will extinguish automatically when the engine is started. As the next service interval approaches and depending on the intensity at which your BMW is being used, the number of green lights will decrease. The fewer that are on, the sooner the next service will be due. The next evolution of this service technology was when the mileage due for next service was displayed. This remaining distance was however calculated based on the way the car has so far been driven, rather than a pre-determined artificially set mileage. With the previous 7 Series generation, this technology took a big leap forward with a Condition Based Service concept. Through the innovative iDrive technology, one could see the remaining distances and times for selected maintenance tasks such as engine oil, brakes, spark plugs, brake fluid, vehicle check etc. Now with the introduction of BMW Teleservices in Singapore, the new BMW 7 Series model is set to shift paradigms in service concepts.

Munich. You always can rely on it: the BMW X3 has finished first in the ADAC quality ranking for the second time in succession. As in the previous year, the Sports Activity Vehicle was awarded the renowned ADAC “Gelber Engel” prize in the “Quality” category. Germany’s automobile club thus once again deems the BMW X3 to be the most reliable vehicle on Germany’s roads. The “Gelber Engel” award is based on an evaluation of some 2 million cases drawn from ADAC breakdown statistics as well as a customer satisfaction study by the club magazine “ADAC motorwelt” in which around 43,000 readers participated this time.
In the ADAC breakdown statistics, the BMW X3 was once again the model which last year made least work for the ADAC roadside assistance mechanics, known in Germany as the “Gelbe Engel”. This experience confirms the high quality level of the Sports Activity – one of the vehicle’s key success factors alongside it fascinatingly agile driving response. The BMW X3 has become a best-seller worldwide, with 500,000 having been supplied as of November 2008.
A pioneer and still a role model in its category: the BMW X3.
Fitted as standard with the intelligent all-wheel drive system xDrive, the BMW X3 is a pioneer and still the benchmark for the vehicles of its segment. This also applies in the area of efficiency. An unbeatably economical balance of driving fun and fuel consumption is especially provided by the BMW X3 xDrive20d. Its 130 kW/177 bhp 4-cylinder diesel engine with all-aluminium crankcase and common rail direct injection of the latest generation is combined with a number of BMW EfficientDynamics measures. The BMW X3 xDrive20d offers impressive pulling power with an average fuel consumption as per EU test cycle of only 6.5 litres per 100 kilometres.
Its range of qualities has led the BMW X3 to win a number of renowned awards. Twice in succession it was voted “Off-road vehicle of the year” and “All-wheel vehicle of the year” by the automobile magazines “Off Road” and “Auto Bild Alles Allrad” respectively. The vehicle’s unique combination of quality, driving fun and efficiency also benefit its value retention. In the off-road vehicle category, the market analysis experts of EurotaxSchwacke ranked the BMW X3 as number one on their 2008 automobile forecast index, showing the SAV model to have lowest level of value loss of all vehicles in this segment.
“Gelber Engel”: a seal of quality which carries considerable weight.
The quality verdict documented by the ADAC “Gelber Engel” prize is based on the experience of professional experts as well as customer assessments. The ADAC breakdown statistics cover all call-outs carried out by the “Gelbe Engel” on the roads of Germany for vehicles between one and six years old. The ranking list of the most reliable models is based on the number of breakdowns per 1000 vehicles registered. There is also an evaluation based on a broad-based customer satisfaction survey run by the club magazine “ADAC motorwelt”. All model series produced in numbers of over 10,000 units each for three years in succession in largely unaltered form are assessed from these two perspectives. In addition to a snapshot impression, this also provides a long-term picture of a vehicle’s reliability, showing that the premium quality of BMW models provides an excellent basis for long-term satisfaction.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ. BMW of North America accepted two 10 Best Engines awards from Ward's Automotive Group. As the only double winner this year, two BMW twin-turbo inline-6 engines -- one diesel and one gasoline -- were elected to the 10 Best Engines list for the 2009 model year by the Ward's panel of expert judges.
"These two awards are further testament that BMW's EfficientDynamics engineering strategy is delivering the performance and efficiency that drivers expect today." said Hans Hohenner, General Manager of Drivetrain Development for BMW Group. "Each of these very different engines brings to market new technologies that combine to create the highest-performing six-cylinder engines BMW has ever produced while delivering fuel efficiency that was previously unattainable."
BMW's gasoline 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged DOHC Inline-6 received a Ward's 10 Best Engines honor for the third time since its introduction in the summer of 2006. The acclaimed engine now powers 11 BMW models in the US - from the 135i to the X6 xDrive35i Sports Activity Coupe. This 300-horsepower engine features twin low-mass turbochargers, High Precision Direct Injection and electrified accessory drives for an unbeatable blend of power, efficiency, and responsiveness. As an example, this engine propels the BMW 335i coupe from rest to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds (manual transmission) yet delivers an EPA-estimated highway mileage of 26 mpg.
The second Ward's 10 Best Engines honor for BMW was awarded to the new 50-state BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance technology. Featuring all-aluminum construction, this light-weight 3.0-liter Sequential Turbo DOHC Advanced Diesel inline-6 offers V-8 performance on four-cylinder consumption: 265 horsepower and 425 lb-ft of torque, with EPA efficiency figures of 23 (city) and 36 (highway) in the 2009 BMW 335d Sedan, which is capable of 0 - 60mph in just 6.0 seconds. In addition to the 335d model mentioned, this new engine will also be available in the X5 xDrive35d Sports Activity Vehicle, which is capable of 0 - 60mph in 6.9 seconds and 26mpg on the highway.

BMW’s most popular model range has been awarded the ‘Best Compact Executive’ car title by ‘What Car?’ magazine for the fourth year in a row. And in a first for the judges from the UK’s self-styled new car buyers’ bible, the BMW 3 Series only had itself to compete against to scoop top honours. Variants of the BMW 3 Series won each of What Car?’s respective sub categories meaning the short list of three cars were all the same make and model. The BMW 320d ES was the actual model that came out on top.
The BMW 3 Series was voted overall Car of Year in 2006 by ‘What Car?’. This latest honour is in addition to a string of awards for the 3 Series in 2008 that includes ‘Best Large Family Vehicle’ from the Environmental Transport Association, ‘Best Compact Executive’ at Auto Express’ Used Car Honours and ‘Best Small Premium Car’ from Business Car.
Klaus Kibsgaard, Managing Director of BMW UK, said: “It’s always a pleasure to be recognised for your endeavours. The BMW 3 Series is the lifeblood of our model portfolio and this prestigious award adds further weight to its class-leading position in the eyes of buyers.”
The ‘What Car?’ honour follows the announcement that BMW won the ‘Engine Development Team of the Year’ at the Automotive Testing Technology International Awards 2008. The Awards were established in 2006 to acknowledge the efforts made by companies and engineers to improve reliability, quality and usability in vehicles, and ensure that outstanding achievements were recognised by the whole of the automotive development community. The work carried out on the EfficientDynamics programme was a key factor in the decision process for this accolade.
For the third year in a row, the MINI Cooper S has been named the best hot hatch on sale in the UK at the annual What Car? awards ceremony.
An unbeatable mix of brilliant performance, low running costs and high residual values are just some of the reasons for the MINI once again taking the highly-coveted gong.
In July last year, the MINI Cooper S won the ‘Green Sports Car’ category in What Car?’s Green Awards 2008. The accolade was recognition of MINI’s commitment to manufacturing frugal and fast premium small cars, with minimal cost to the environment.
The efficiency gains and CO2 emission reduction provided by standard fitment of MINIMALISM technology, which includes Auto Start/Stop, Brake Energy Regeneration and Shift Point Display, helped secure another title for the MINI Cooper S ahead of more recently launched competitor models.
Recognition of the strides MINI is making in reducing C02 emissions across its model range was underlined in research findings published earlier this week by CleanGreenCars.com
The website released figures which detailed calculations of the average CO2 emissions of each car sold during 2008, therefore reflecting improvements in the emissions of the model ranges on offer, as well as the buying pattern of the market.
The cleanest car manufacturer of 2008 was found to be MINI at 137.24 g/km*, while the industry average CO2 emission figure stood at 158.7g/km.
MINI’s average CO2 output improved by an impressive 6.8 per cent in 2008. Further improvements will be achieved across the range when the new MINI Convertible is launched on 28 March 2009, meaning CO2 emissions from a MINI will be as low as 104 g/km for the MINI Cooper D and no higher than 153 g/km for the sporty MINI Cooper S Convertible.

Munich. In 2008 BMW has once again asserted its status as the world’s most successful supplier of all-wheel drive automobiles and has once more moved significantly ahead of its main competitors. 323, 293 vehicles fitted with the intelligent all-wheel drive system xDrive were sold throughout the world. This means that the market leader was able to increase sales of all-wheel drive automobiles by around one per cent in spite of tough market conditions. This positive development shows that customers are becoming increasingly aware of the system’s superior qualities as compared to the competition. xDrive’s lead over the manufacturer in second place in the segment was almost doubled as compared to 2007.
The share of vehicles fitted with xDrive in relation to total sales of the brand BMW increased to 27 per cent in 2008. This ongoing success is the result of the consistent further development of the range of BMW X models and of a further extended selection of all-wheel drive vehicles within the BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series. All in all BMW currently offers 37 models in which the electronically controlled variable power distribution between the front and rear wheels ensures optimised driving dynamics on the road and supreme traction over rough terrain. The latest addition is the BMW 320d xDrive, so there are now three petrol engines and two diesel engines which now be combined with xDrive in the Sedan, Touring and Coupé models of the BMW 3 Series. In the BMW 5 Series, there are two petrol and two diesel engines available for both the Sedan and Touring fitted with the all-wheel drive system. The BMW X3 is available in six versions, the BMW X5 and the BMW X6 are each available in four engine variations.
Steps have already been taken to ensure that the system will progress even further. In the course of 2009 xDrive will be introduced to additional vehicle segments. The BMW X1, which will bring the characteristic features of a BMW X model to the segment of premium compact vehicles for the first time, will soon be ready for serial production, as will the first BMW 7 Series with xDrive and the first all-wheel drive models by BMW M GmbH.
Pioneer and pace-setter for superior all-wheel technology: 10 years of the BMW X5.
All-wheel drive vehicles have been part of the BMW model range since 1985, when the BMW 325ix was first launched. However, power transmission via all four wheels received its most powerful growth stimulus ten years ago in 1999, when the BMW X5 was launched – the world’s first ever Sporty Activity Vehicle. The BMW X5 provided an enrichment of the off-road vehicle market with its unsurpassed sporty driving qualities on the road, which clearly set it apart from the competition.
This concept has since inspired other manufacturers to produce imitations, but in transferring the idea to other segments BMW continues to occupy the leading position. All in all over 1.3 million BMW X models have been sold since 1999, including over 243,000 in 2008 alone. The best-seller is the BMW X5, now in its second model generation. But the BMW X3, launched in 2003, has also been sold more than 500,000 times. The BMW X6, which got off to a successful start in 2008, is the first and only Sports Activity Coupé in the world. And like all BMW X models before it, the BMW X1 will be a pioneer in its vehicle category without any competition in the premium segment at its launch.
BMW X models as trend-setters and innovation leaders.
In addition to these attractive vehicle concepts, the unique functionality of the all-wheel system developed by BMW contributes to its ongoing success. With BMW xDrive, power transmission is controlled permanently by a distributor gear with an electronically regulated multi-disc clutch. In this way, drive power is distributed variably between the front and rear axle and is always available wherever it can be converted most effectively into movement. In the BMW X6, Dynamic Performance Control is also used for the first time, likewise providing spontaneous distribution of drive power, in this case between the right and left rear wheels. The stabilising function of Dynamic Performance Control is even applied in response to sudden load changes and when coasting.
The two systems are networked with one another via the central Integrated Chassis Management (ICM), which also controls Dynamic Stability Control, active steering (if fitted) and the chassis regulation system Adaptive Drive. This unique technology enables drive and chassis functions to be harmonised within a fraction of a second in such a way that agility, steering precision, driving stability and traction are optimised to deal with every situation on the road. For example, any tendency of the vehicle to oversteer or understeer is suppressed by means of selective intervention before it is even noticed by the driver. Precision when steering round bends and directional stability when braking and setting off on slippery surfaces are all tangibly enhanced. In extreme traction conditions in particular, xDrive – networked with ICM - is considerably faster and more effective than conventional all-wheel drive systems.
The innovative strength on which the development of the current BMW X models is based is not only reflected in power transmission but also in the exemplary efficiency in the generation of drive energy. Due to their state-of-the-art engine technology and BMW EfficientDynamics measures fitted as standard, BMW X models demonstrate a relationship between driving dynamics and fuel consumption which is unsurpassed in all engine output categories. Impressive examples of this are provided by the following average fuel consumption levels based on the EU test cycle: 6.5 litres per 100 kilometres in the BMW X3 xDrive 20d with 130kW/177 bhp, and 8.2 litres in the BMW X6 xDrive with 173 kW/235 bhp.
A BMW X model will also be the focus of attention at the launch of BMW ActiveHybrid Technology. The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid will be ready for serial production in the course of 2009: it combines an 8-cylinder engine and an electric motor using an innovative Two-Mode Active Transmission. This model will also reflect the progress in the combination of driving pleasure and economy which is so characteristic of BMW and its development strategy BMW EfficientDynamics. Its innovative technology gives the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid a level of driving dynamics which has not been achieved by any other conventional hybrid vehicle to date, providing a fuel consumption bonus of up to 20 per cent as compared to a comparable vehicle with combustion engine only.

Munich. The BMW Group scored double victory at this year’s readers’ vote for the “Best Cars 2009” organised by the “auto, motor und sport” car magazine in Germany – one of Europe’s leading car magazines. The new BMW 7 Series was voted first place in the deluxe class. MINI came in first for the ninth consecutive year in the small car segment.
The introduction of the fifth generation of the BMW 7 Series Luxury Saloon, the world’s most successful manufacturer of premium cars is setting the benchmark once again, proving how sheer driving pleasure and the pleasure of exclusive generosity may be perfectly combined in the ultimate symbiosis. By securing the top spot in this year’s “Best Cars 2009” survey, it reinforces the confidence that consumers have in BMW products.
Launched in Singapore in January 2009, the new BMW 7 Series not only started off well on the international and local car markets, but also in the opinion of professional testers and the public. The new BMW luxury saloon accounted for an impressive 26.1% of the votes, proving that the readers were not only fascinated by its luxurious style and exclusive interior, but also because of the unique combination of comfort, dynamic and efficiency typical of BMW.
The series of victories for the MINI in the readers’ vote of the “Best Cars 2009” coincides with the growing sales figures of the only premium brand in the small car segment. More than 31% voted for the MINI in this segment.
The “Best Cars 2009” readers’ survey is held for the 33rd time. In this year’s survey, the readers could vote between a total of 336 cars in 10 categories. More than 100,000 readers took part in the voting.

Munich. Delivering 24 186 BMW M Automobiles to customers in the 2008 business year, BMW M GmbH has scored the second-best result in the thirty-year history of the company, increasing sales by approximately 50 per cent over the previous year.
“Particularly the ongoing high level of BMW M Car sales also in the second half of the year underlines the great emotional appeal our products have for the customer”, stated Ludwig Willisch, President of BMW M GmbH.
The new BMW M3 was the outstanding driving force behind this positive development, accounting for worldwide sales of almost 18 000 units in its first complete year of production. As a result, the BMW M3 available since 2008 as a Coupe, Sedan and Convertible, made an even more successful entry into the market than its predecessor which in 2002 already made a significant contribution to the company’s most successful business year so far (26 776 units delivered to customers). The great success of the new BMW M3 was also one of the reasons why BMW M GmbH was able to celebrate a second milestone in the company’s 30th year of street car production, delivery of the 300 000th BMW M Automobile setting yet another benchmark in the history of BMW M GmbH in 2008.
The model portfolio of BMW M GmbH currently comprises seven models with the new BMW M3 Coupe leading the internal sales ranking with a total number of 10 571 units sold last year. Sales of the BMW M3 Sedan introduced in March 2008 amounted to
3 253 units, with the BMW M3 Convertible launched in May 2008 accounting for an even more impressive 4 169 cars.
Worldwide sales of the BMW M5 available as both a Sedan and Touring have also developed far more successfully than with the former model: In the 2008 year of business no less than 2 465 BMW M5s went to customers the world over.
Last but not least, both the BMW M6 Coupe and the BMW M6 Convertible still retain all of their fascinating class, no less than 1,102 customers opting for the high-performance Coupe and 1,158 customers choosing the equally outstanding Convertible.
This truly excellent annual result was rounded off by the ongoing success of the BMW Z4 M Roadster and the BMW Z4 M Coupe, which reached the end of their production cycle in August 2008: In this case no less than 699 Roadsters and 739 Coupes went to true connoisseurs of sporting, purist two-seaters.
Consistent growth in all major markets.
The great enthusiasm for the top performance, authentic design and motorsport technology offered by BMW M Automobiles is a global phenomenon. Precisely this is why all major market regions the world over contribute to the dynamic increase in sales. Once again, the USA, accounting for 10 663 units delivered to customers, was the most significant individual market. In the home country of the particularly large but not so dynamic street cruiser, the sports cars from BMW M GmbH showed an increase in sales by almost 70 per cent over the previous year.
Germany, the company’s home market, became the second most significant sales region for BMW M GmbH in 2008, with 2 777 new cars bearing the M logo registered in Germany, an increase over 2007 by approximately 37 per cent.
Showing equally impressive growth of more than 20 per cent to 2 469 units, Great Britain and Northern Ireland once again come third in the list of the most important markets for BMW M cars.
BMW M GmbH achieved by far its highest growth rate in relative terms in Canada, with customer deliveries increasing by almost 130 per cent to 1 114 cars. Sales figures also reached the four-digit range in Italy (1 072 units/ + 31 per cent) and Japan (1 063/ + 6 per cent).
Significant increase in sales of M Sports Packages.
Sales of Sports Packages now available for the BMW 1 Series, the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 5 Series, the BMW 6 Series as well as the BMW X3 and the BMW X5 likewise showed significant growth in 2008. The fascinating technology and flair of these design, suspension and interior options derived authentically from motorsport appeal particularly to drivers of the BMW 3 Series: In 2008 more than 58 000 purchasers of a BMW 3 Series took the opportunity to highlight the dynamic profile of their car even more clearly through the harmoniously balanced features and components offered within the M Sports Package.
A further important milestone is that more than 41 000 BMW
1 Series were likewise equipped with a Sports Package in 2008, representing an increase over the previous year by approximately 60 per cent. In all, the number of M Sports Packages sold worldwide increased by more than 7 per cent to 156 139.
The most significant sales market for M Sports Packages is Great Britain and Ireland, followed by Germany, with sales figures continuing to increase in both markets in 2008.
Personal style growing in significance: BMW Individual continuing on its road of success.
Expanding the range of products to an even higher level, BMW M GmbH has made the portfolio of BMW Individual even more attractive. Exquisite materials for the interior, top-end entertainment systems, exclusive paintwork options and light-alloy rims, as well as further exterior highlights enable the customer to enjoy the sheer driving pleasure so typical of the brand in particularly exclusive style.
In 2008 no less than 6 589 particularly demanding customers took the opportunity to convert their BMW, through selected design and equipment features from the broad portfolio of BMW Individual, into a genuine one-off masterpiece reflecting their personal style to the last detail.
In all, more than 30 000 cars were upgraded worldwide by way of all kinds of BMW Individual modifications, thus offering truly exclusive and unmistakable character. This is an increase in sales of such special features from BMW Individual by more than 30 per cent.
“This development”, states Ludwig Willisch, “clearly proves that customers of BMW as the leading premium brand show particular preference for genuine exclusivity and individual style – and this trend is growing”.
Demand for BMW Individual increased especially in Great Britain and Ireland, which have indeed become the most important sales markets for products from BMW Individual.
Enjoying sheer driving pleasure in superior style: BMW Group Driver Training.
Driver Training developed and organised by BMW M GmbH remains consistently popular. In 2008 alone more than 15 000 participants completed a training programme in various categories of BMW Driver Training, MINI Driver Training, and BMW Motorcycle Rider Training. The choice of training courses extends from beginners’ seminars all the way to the target-oriented training of motorsport skills on a race track. The know-how conveyed in the process by professional instructors enables participants to enjoy driving pleasure in particular superior style.
Introduced in 2008, EfficientDynamics training combined with safety exercises proved particularly popular last year. “This new concept focusing in particular on fuel-efficient driving and safety obviously gives our customers exactly what they are looking for and was therefore chosen by a large number of new participants experiencing BMW Driver Training in this way for the first time”, states Willisch.
New models, products and activities setting new momentum in 2009.
The significant increase in customer deliveries in 2008 shows clearly that the particular thrill of the cars and products marketed by BMW M GmbH also has a strong impact under generally difficult market conditions. Through their authentic design, highlights in technology based on years of experience in motorsport, and a harmonious overall concept, the wide range of models and other products from BMW M GmbH rank truly unique in the market. So the letter “M” continues to point in the right direction for the customer looking for a truly outstanding driving experience based on top performance and exclusivity all in one.
The decisive steps for continuing this story of success have already been taken: In the course of 2009 BMW M GmbH will once again be expanding its range of high-performance sports cars, carrying over the characteristics so typical of M to yet another vehicle segment.
At the same time the wide range of products available in M Sports Packages and through BMW Individual, as well as the range of BMW Driver Training options, will continue to gain further appeal. Indeed, the market launch of BMW Individual for the new BMW 7 Series marks the starting point in further expanding the already wide range of products, offering perfect options tailored to both current and future models alike.

With the products of the new accessory line, the BMW brand values of dynamic performance, sportiness and innovation can be emphasised in a way which is individually determined by the customer in terms of form and style. The high-quality technical construction and authentic BMW design makes the longstanding racing tradition of the brand come alive on the road. All BMW Performance components are available individually. This means that every driver of a BMW has the opportunity to add clear sporty accentuations in his own areas of preference by means of selected retrofit options. Alternatively, as all items of the BMW Performance are designed to provide a fascinating sporty experience, the BMW Performance products can also be combined to form a harmonious and integrated overall package.
Aerodynamics: made-to-measure optimisation
The BMW Performance aerodynamics kit ensures optimisation of driving dynamics properties and also guarantees a striking look in everyday traffic. The BMW Performance aerodynamics kit for all models of the BMW 1 Series includes a striking front apron with a highly expressive integrated surround of the BMW kidney grille in black high-gloss look and with dynamically contoured sills.
Chassis technology for supreme sporty handling.
The aim to achieve enhanced dynamic performance was also the main focus of the development of BMW Performance components for the chassis. Specially developed for this are the BMW Performance sports brake system, the BMW Performance chassis, a BMW Performance suspension cross-brace made of carbon fibre and an attractive double-spoke lightweight construction wheel. The BMW Performance sports brake system comprises especially generously sized, vented brake discs with perforations and air slots on the front wheels. The 6-piston fixed caliper brakes at the front axle are finished in striking BMW Performance yellow and also bear the lettering “BMW Performance”. This designation is also to be found on the suspension cross-brace, which is placed in the engine compartment for additional enhancement of body stiffness.
Another new development is the BMW Performance chassis. Due to its especially sporty suspension settings, it ensures improved handling and optimum performance for a very sporty driving style. At the same time, a high degree of comfort is preserved for driving in everyday traffic. The installation of the BMW Performance chassis also lowers the vehicle, thus providing excellent road grip even for the sportiest manoeuvres. The coil springs also provide a striking visual touch due to their design in sporty BMW Performance yellow. The BMW Performance double spoke lightweight construction wheel with its exclusive design underscores the sporty character of the vehicle and increases agility due to its low weight.
Powertrain: optimised air ducting and striking tailpipes.
The new BMW Performance air inlet system is designed to boost the air intake of in-line 6-cylinder petrol engines of the BMW 1 Series. Based on the standard version, the filter insert and internal air ducting have been modified. This guarantees an improved air flow with less margin for drop in pressure. The system also ensures a sporty sound experience inside the vehicle. The optimisation of power delivery provided by the BMW Performance air intake system also has a positive effect on engine efficiency.
The BMW Performance silencer system is responsible for the acoustic aspect of the increased pulling power. Without impairing the long-distance comfort of the vehicle, the system gives the engine sound a discreet but perceptibly sporty touch. The dual tailpipes in high-quality chrome steel visually highlight the high-tech status of the vehicle. The corrosion-resistant material is also highly durable.
Interior in the style of a sports car.
Anyone who would like to experience the dynamic performance of their BMW can create an interior ambience in the style of a sports car with BMW Performance products. The cockpit of a BMW 1 Series can be transformed into an action centre for drivers with sporty ambitions. The cup-shaped BMW Performance sports seats in racing design provide excellent holding, being ergonomically adapted to the human body at the sides, too. In addition to their tangible seating comfort, they offer an impressively refined, slim design with a covering in black Alcantara. Below the integrated headrests there are two openings decorated with synthetic trim elements in ferric grey. Side airbags are also integrated in the seats.
In addition to being a visual highlight, the BMW Performance gear lever also provides stylish support for dynamic gear shifting. The ergonomically optimised design of the gearshift knob in chrome and black Alcantara facilitates precise handling, and the special gear lever also reduces shift travel by around 25 percent as compared to the standard version.
As a supplement to this, the concept of an innovative multifunction sports steering wheel was also developed for the new BMW Performance range. With its surround in Alcantara and leather, this steering wheel is especially pleasant and solid to hold. In the upper area of the steering wheel rim there is an LED display which shows various items of technical information such as oil and water temperature, transverse and longitudinal acceleration, shift point and time. The various information items can be accessed by pressing the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel.
High-quality and sporty style can be given further emphasis inside the vehicle by means of decor strips in carbon design for the center console and the instrument panel and trim panels for the front and rear doors and the side rear area. And the aluminium pedals and footrest – also part of the BMW Performance program – likewise bring the qualities of a racing car to everyday driving due to their design and functionality.

Munich. Outstanding driving dynamics and unique design made the BMW X6 the clear favourite of the “Off Road” specialist magazine readership. Winning by a clear margin, the first Sports Activity Coupe in the world scored top marks in the “Four by Four of the Year 2009” competition’s “Crossover” category. The finishing touches to the BMW X models’ success story were added when the BMW X5 was selected third in the “Luxury SUV” category.
The excellent score that BMW X models achieved during the “Off Road” reader survey is a reflection of the undiminished attraction of BMW X models and proves the successful reinterpretation of their most important features in the context of a completely new vehicle segment. The superior driving dynamics of the winning Sports Activity Coupe BMW X6 are underlined by the model’s coupe-like line arrangement and powerful stance, which made their presence felt from the first. The new vehicle concept is closely connected with a unique driving experience. Dynamic Performance Control, introduced with the BMW X6, carries out the variable distribution of drive power between the front and rear wheels not only by means of the electronically controlled BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive but also between both rear wheels, thus consistently adjusting to driving conditions at all times and in all situations. Attributes such as agility, steering precision, stability and traction are raised to new dimensions.
Due to its modern drive technology, which includes the integration of extensive BMW EfficientDynamics technology, the BMW X6 also meets the requirements for reduced consumption and emission rates. An EU test cycle showed an average fuel consumption of 8.2 litres for 100 kilometres. With this result, the 173 kW/235 hp BMW X6 xDrive30d has achieved an efficiency that until quite recently would have been regarded as inconceivable for its category and performance class.
Exactly ten years ago, the German manufacturer of premium cars laid down the foundations of the BMW X models’ success by launching the predecessor of the current BMW X5 – the first Sports Activity Vehicle. The BMW X5 with its unique combination of sporting on-road characteristics and confident off-road traction defined new standards. Its predecessor boosted the attractiveness of the Sports Activity Vehicle concept not just in terms of dynamic driving but also with the combination of luxurious appeal with high functionality in the interior and the exemplary efficiency of its drive technology.
Accolades awarded by the “Off Road” specialist magazine rate high among manufacturers of all-wheel drive cars. They are based on the assessment of a readership whose substantial expertise and strong affinity to and fascination for off-road driving is on a par with that of the magazine’s highly competent and experienced editorial team. Last year, “Off Road” magazine celebrated its thirtieth anniversary. The magazine’s highly qualified readership has been taking part in the annual selection of the most popular off-road vehicles in the German market since 1982. The current success in the “Off Road” reader survey is yet another achievement in a series of awards won by BMW X models in the recent past.
Sales figures in this segment are another indicator of the sustained success of BMW X models. Ten years after the launch of the BMW X5, more than 1.3 million BMW X models have been sold, more than 243,000 of these in 2008 alone. Their enormous popularity was a major contribution to the fact that BMW successfully consolidated its position as the most successful global supplier of all-wheel drive premium cars in 2008. A total of 27% of all newly registered BMW models are equipped with xDrive and the near future will bring yet another expansion of the BMW X range. In addition to the BMW X6, BMW X5 and BMW X3 models, the car manufacturer will soon launch the new BMW X1. This new model will re-interpret the characteristic attributes of this vehicle segment in the context of the premium compact category.

Munich. A total of seven accolades for high design quality in the field of product development will be bestowed on the BMW Group at the presentation of the 2009 red dot awards. The internationally renowned label goes to the new BMW 7 Series, the new BMW Z4 as well as to the motorcycle models BMW K 1300 S and BMW K 1300 R. Moreover, the leather suits Sport and Atlantis from the BMW Motorrad biker collection as well as the new BMW Cruise Bike will receive awards. The award ceremony will take place during a festive award gala at the Aalto Theatre in Essen on 29 June 2009. With its excellent results achieved in the 2009 red dot award competition, the BMW Group continues its current success story. In recent weeks, further BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad vehicles and products have acquired numerous internationally significant awards, including the Design Prize of the German Federal Republic, the IF Product Design Award of the Industry Forum Design in Hanover as well as the Eyes On Design Award and the Good Design Award presented in the USA.
Both the number and the diversity of the products which have been awarded prizes at international competitions substantiate the success of the design philosophy that applies to the entire BMW Group. It forms the basis for brand and product specific design strategies that are oriented in their entirety towards a consistently high quality standard. Just like the vehicles offered by the BMW, MINI, Rolls Royce and BMW Motorrad brands, products from the lifestyle and biker collection boast a design that is characterised by aesthetic quality standards and clearly defined premium requirements. Their design authentically expresses the brand character and the distinguishing features of each product.
Successful start for the BMW 7 Series and the BMW Z4.
In the forefront of the presentation of the 2009 red dot award, the competition jury assessed the design of 3,231 products submitted from all four corners of the world. Four BMW models received accolades in the categories automobiles, transport and caravan. The new BMW 7 Series convinced the jury with a harmonious combination of elegance, sportiness and visual presence. Its body design embodies in the luxury saloon segment both an outstanding degree of comfort as well as superior driving dynamics. Prior to this, the brand’s flagship as well as further BMW Group automobiles, these being the BMW 1 Series Coupe, the BMW 1 Series Convertible and the MINI Cooper S Clubman, had already received accolades at the IF Product Design Award.
Even before being launched on the market, the new BMW Z4 had got off to a successful start, now also creating quite a sensation at the red dot award, after receiving the Eyes On Design Award presented during the 2009 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. In both cases the jury gave recognition to the modern interpretation of classic roadster styling, which helps the new BMW Z4 take a special position in its segment. Thanks to the elongated bonnet, the flat waistline and the seat position located well to the back in the vicinity of the rear axle, the design of the new BMW Z4, which is also equipped for the first time with a retractable hardtop, offers ideal prerequisites for the unique driving experience in a BMW roadster.
BMW Motorrad achieves series of international victories.
Since the beginning of the year, current models from the BMW Motorrad brand have also been presented with numerous prestigious design awards. The 2009 red dot award goes to the BMW K 1300 S and the BMW K 1300 R. The BMW K 1300 S is the most powerful and the fastest motorcycle ever offered by BMW Motorrad. Its appearance authentically expresses power, elegance, sportiness and perfection.
The BMW K 1300 R is the embodiment of an uncompromising power roadster – both in terms of technology and design. It also sets new benchmarks in performance offered by a BMW Motorrad model in the Naked Bike segment. Accordingly, its outstanding dynamics are emphasised by a decidedly muscular design.
The double victory at the 2009 red dot awards is for the present the climax of a series of victories achieved by BMW Motorrad, towards which four further models have made a considerable contribution. The BMW HP2 Sport, which received a red dot award last year, has now been awarded the Design Prize of the German Federal Republic by the Design Council. Furthermore, the flat twin engine, the technology and design of which was directly derived from racing, received the Good Design Award of the Architecture and Design Museum Chicago Athenaeum, which also additionally honoured the models BMW R 1200 GS, BMW F 800 GS and BMW G 450 X. Like the BMW HP2 Sport, the off-road touring trail bike BMW F 800 GS has also turned out to be a consistent winner. After winning the red dot award in 2008, it has now been presented with the IF Product Design Award.
The presentation of the Good Design Awards in Chicago was not only extremely successful for the BMW Motorrad brand. Prizes were also awarded to the BMW 3 Series Convertible, the BMW 1Series Coupe and the MINI Cooper S Clubman as well as the BMW helmet Sport and the BMW leather suit Sport from the BMW Motorrad biker equipment line. A further Good Design Award went to the BMW Cruise Bike which has now also been honoured with the 2009 red dot award . This puristic bike convinced through distinctive design and a silhouette derived from BMW automobiles. The frame presents innovative hydroforming technology in characteristic BMW styling.
Number one in quality and design: BMW Motorrad biker equipment.
Outstanding material and manufacturing quality, the highest degree of functionality as well as a design that also visually underlines the premium character of the products, characterise the helmets and suits from the BMW Motorrad biker equipment collection. The harmony of functional and creative features consistently results in awards at international design competitions. For instance, the BMW helmet Sport won accolades not only at the Good Design Award in Chicago, but also at the 2009 German IF Award. The most significant feature of this innovative integral helmet are its outstanding aerodynamic qualities that are also concisely reflected in its design.
The BMW leather suit Sport, combing high-class material properties with optimum wearing comfort and expressive design, was given the 2009 red dot award, after having been successful at the Good Design Award. Likewise, the BMW leather suit Atlantis also bears the prestigious red dot label. As a first-class all-weather touring suit and winner of the IF Award for outstanding product design, it offers optimised protection from water and wind.

Jakarta. PT BMW Indonesia invites the media to experience first-hand the convenience of the BMW Navigation System in getting around Jakarta’s congested streets.
The BMW 320i Lifestyle, equipped with the BMW Navigation System as a standard feature, was launched here in July 2008. With increasing demand for the digital map in the market, BMW 3 Series is the first in its segment to answer these needs through use of the original manufacturer equipment, BMW Navigation System, as a standard feature.
The map, using the GPS satellite system, makes finding a specific destination easy even in a teeming, traffic-filled city like Jakarta. Just as in cities in Europe, the United States and several developed countries in Asia, this navigation system will become a necessity for all transportation in Jakarta. With a proper supporting infrastructure, in the future the navigation system can be developed to assist in traffic management in the city.
40 journalists from 25 media are participating in this media drive program designed to familiarize them with the usage and the features of the BMW Navigation system by using it in a practical way. The driving program is prepared in line with the characteristics of BMW which are active, sporty, modern, mobile, dynamic and stylish. Ten units of the BMW 320i Lifestyle have been prepared for 10 groups of journalists to navigate through the city of Jakarta.
Starting from Bimasena Club Dharmawangsa, the journalists are guided to three spots in Jakarta with only a clue on the coordinate position of each location. There are two alternative roads to reach each of the spots, and the journalists are requested to take a photo of a specific area along the road to make sure that they take the right route to the destination.
The BMW Navigation System features 4.3” touch screen display monitor installed in the dashboard. The most up-to-date maps of Java and Bali have been pre-installed in the system. In the future, customers can update their digital map at BMW authorized dealers.
Locating restaurants, hotels, fuel stations as well as members of the BMW dealer network become simple and convenient. The driver only has to enter the name of the desired location into the system for the navigator to guide him or her to the intended location. The innovative BMW Navigation system is also equipped with the Bluetooth and MP3 player.
Paired with mobile phones that are equipped with Bluetooth technology, the BMW Navigation features a hands-free phone system to offer a higher safety driving standard. The driver can receive calls and talk into the speaker and microphone installed in the system. Call can also be made to a certain point of interest location to make reservation for dinner or lunch. Phone book transfer is also available on selected mobile phone models.

The safety concept of the new BMW 3 Series is based on a solid body structure, the selective application of high-strength steel types and special deformation elements which divert and absorb impact energy. In addition there are six airbags, 3-point automatic belts, equipped with belt tensioner and belt force limiter and also headrests on all seats to offer occupants optimum protection.
What is more, ISOFIX children’s seat mounts on the rear seats are a standard feature. The front seats of the new BMW 3 Series are fitted as standard with crash-active headrests which significantly reduce the risk of injury to the cervical spine in the event of an impact. Controlled by the vehicle’s safety electronics system, this feature ensures that in the event of a rear-on collision the front section of the headrest is moved forward by up to 60 millimetres and upwards by as much as 40 millimetres. This reduces the distance between headrest and head, thus increasing the stabilising and securing function of the headrest.
The BMW 320i Executive features safety equipment for its passengers with Run Flat Tyres on its 205/55 R16 wheels. BMW is the only manufacture in Indonesia to introduce RFT as a standard feature of its models due to road safety and security reason. In the event of a puncture, the driver is generally able to continue driving without having to stop the car to change the wheel. A distance of 150 km can be covered at the speed of 80 km/h, despite tire damage and/or completely deflated tires.
Other safety feature is the rain sensor, to ensure safety and comfort by providing automatic switch on the wiper while it starts raining, so the driver is able to keep his/her attention on the road.
BMW EfficientDynamics
- Intelligent light weight technology.
- Valvetronic.
- Aerodynamics.
BMW EfficientDynamics cover all BMW technology innovations developed with the purpose of reducing fuel consumption and emissions while produce high performance. In the new BMW 3 Series, this includes intelligent light weight technology, Valvetronic and its aerodynamics.
The less a car weighs, the less fuel it requires. The body-shell of the new BMW 3 Series comes with an extremely precise balance of low weight on the one hand and high strength on the other. This is made possible by intelligent lightweight construction, appropriate use of high and ultra-high strength steel providing an extremely stable body structure and the use of aluminium on numerous components such as front axle and multi-link rear axle to reduce the overall weight of the car while enhancing passive safety at the same time.
At 1,445 kg, the new BMW 3 Series is the lightest car in its segment
Valvetronic controls the amount of lift of the individual intake valves on each cylinder and precisely regulates the quantity of air entering the cylinders. Valvetronic produces fuel savings up to 10%. It also lowers exhaust emissions and provides smoother, more immediate power.
Aerodynamic value also defines how a vehicle moves fast against the airflow along the road. The new BMW 3 Series has the best aerodynamics in its segment with drag coefficient value of 0,26. A low drag coefficient value results in less fuel consumption.

Munich. The new BMW Z4 draws attention to itself not just on the road but also among internationally renowned design experts. Just a few weeks after its market launch, the Roadster has now received the International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) 2009 in the USA. The award is presented annually by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), based in Duelles in the state of Virginia. The BMW Z4 received the bronze award, thus continuing the success story of BMW Group vehicles in this competition. Since 2000, nine vehicles of the brands BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad have been recognised for their outstanding design.
The new BMW Z4 impressed the jury with a design which unmistakably and authentically reflects the driving pleasure characteristic of the roadster. With its long bonnet, long wheelbase, large wheels and short overhangs, the two-seater possesses classic roadster proportions which are interpreted in a modern way with a styling which is characteristic of the brand. Its sophisticated surface design gives the BMW Z4 a fascinating elegance which can be seen from every perspective. Its appearance is that of a vehicle sculpture shaped as a single entity. An equally characteristic feature is the low seating position close to the rear axle. The resulting driving experience and the visual impression of the roadster thus provide a perfectly integrated and fascinating whole.
For the first time, a BMW Roadster is fitted with a retractable hard top. The dual-section roof in aluminium lightweight construction also contributes to the harmonious design of the BMW Z4. When closed, the hard top provides a flowing, coupé-like roof line which highlights the car’s elegant look. When open, it is discreetly and harmoniously integrated into the flat rear.
The success of the BMW Z4 at the 2009 International Design Excellent Awards builds on the outstanding showing of the BMW Group in this competition in past years. Three vehicles of the BMW Group have received a gold award: the motorcycle models BMW K 1200 LT in 2000 and BMW R 1200 GS (2004) and the MINI Cooper S (2003). Silver has gone to the BMW X5 (2000) and the MINI Convertible (2005), bronze to the motorcycle model BMW F 650 CS (2003). What is more, the BMW 3 Series Convertible and the motorcycle model BMW F 8090 GS achieved finalist status in last year’s competition.
The international jury of the International Design Excellence Awards presented awards in 17 categories this year. In addition to products from the fields of transport, office equipment, communication, household and consumer electronics, there was also assessment of design research projects and innovations in the field of environmental technology. The official award ceremony will be held on September 26th 2009 after the annual international design conference of the IDSA in Miami.
